Lofoten
Landscape Photography.

Feb | 2024

By a normal standard of judgement, Norway’s Lofoten islands should be awful to visit.

It’s archipelago of impenetrable mountains, surrounded by ferocious arctic waters, in the uninviting climate of the arctic circle, with inhumanly cold winds, and months of darkness.

Human life shouldn’t exist here. Its people shouldn’t be happy. It shouldn’t look pretty. Nor should it be easy to explore. But the opposite is true. Against all odds, life not only exists here; it looks and feels wonderful.

  • We visited Lofoten with the aim of capturing some of the mountain vistas that make it a mecca for landscape photographers.

Yet the scenes I found most interesting were the ones that captured the signs of life prevailing in such an arduous land: beautiful coloured houses and churches, dwarfed by the vast mountains and landscapes around them.

Our choice to visit in winter added an extra layer of mystique: the juxtaposition of summer lives (BBQs, picnic benches, and surf schools), that had been abandoned and succumbed to the arctic winter looked eerily beautiful.

Even during winter, time spent in Lofoten was good for the soul.

And I’d recommend anyone to visit.
